Why Getting Engaged on "The Bachelor" Is Awesome (and Why It's Kinda Awful)

Discover, manage, and track all of your vendor communication, contracts, and timelines in one place.
If you watch "The Bachelor," you know that's the whole point of the show — the bachelor in question is to pop the question to one lucky lady at the end of the season (while we all watch with mouths agape, of course). And even though it's awesome to see two people fall in love and get engaged on-screen (for us at home, at least), we can't decide if we'd actually want to get affianced on TV. So, we've come up with five reasons why it's pretty rad to get engaged on "The Bachelor" and five reasons why it would kind of suck...you know, we just need to understand our options!

THE AWESOME:

1. You'll be totally prepared—beauty- and fashion-wise, that is.
You'll look red-carpet perfect the moment your man proposes: Someone will do your makeup, your hair, and deck you out in an amazing dress (and jewelry, to boot). If there was ever a time to look your best, this is surely it.
2. The destination is vacation-worthy.
Typically, "The Bachelor" proposal happens somewhere amazing—like Tahiti or Thailand—allowing the couple to relax in paradise together post-popping the question. (We're guessing Arlington, IA is going to be an outlier as far as proposal settings go...)
3. The set-up is incredibly romantic.
ABC doesn't mess around with creating an epic proposal setting. From rose petals to lanterns, waterfalls to chandeliers, details are always gorgeous. Clearly, the people who work on putting together the actual place of proposal are total pros. Oh, and it's all free, of course.
4. You'll have it on tape forever.
Unless your guy hired a covert team of videographers, chances are you'll never be able to watch your proposal and you'll need to rely on your good ol' memory to recall what your partner actually said when he popped the question. If you're on "The Bachelor," however, you will have a cinematic record of every moment to cherish and show your kids.
5. You won't have to tell your proposal story over and over (and over!) again.
Let's he honest, it can get a tiny bit tiring after a while to retell your engagement story after the 20th person asks to hear all the details. But if you get engaged on "The Bachelor," everyone's already seen it.

THE AWFUL:

1. There's a 50/50 chance that you're getting dumped...not engaged.
Talk about nerve-wracking. Seriously, is feeling completely uncertain about where you stand with the man you love the way you want to kick off the day you get engaged? Plus, there is nothing at all romantic about knowing that, just before he asked you to marry him, your man had to dump another woman… who he was also falling in love with.
2. It's not private in any way, shape or form.
While having a hidden photographer capture your guy down on one knee is fairly standard as far as proposals go these days, having dozens of camera operators and production assistants standing by to watch your dude put a ring on it is something else entirely. (Having Chris Harrison there, though, is totally awesome.)
3. You don't get a say as far as your ring goes.
Chances are, you and the bachelor didn't get a chance to go ring shopping while you were filming the show. And since you've only known each other for a matter of weeks, you probably didn't reveal to him that you have a dream setting and style in mind. The man is going in blind when choosing your ring and, since he's proposing in front of millions of people, you kind of have to just say you love it and rock it. No matter what.
4. You don't get to tell anyone your proposal story.
Because everyone already knows it...and saw it firsthand!
5. You can't hang with your new fiancé after he pops the question.
After the show wraps, you can't be seen with your guy, lest the general public catches wind of who the bachelor chose at the season's end. So, you can try to be covert about spending time together, but chances are you won't see a lot of your man for at least the first couple months of your engagement.
